Due to Shanghai’s cloudy, rainy climate, seedlings grown under natural daylight alone do not produce very good results. The lack of sufficient sunlight results in low-quality, spindly and fragile seedlings that struggle to survive once they have been transplanted into the field.

The right lighting 

The aim of this nursery is to supply local vegetable growers with healthy and robust seedlings all year round, so they in turn can supply the citizens of Shanghai with delicious fresh vegetables on a daily basis.

The Faculty of Agriculture and Biology therefore decided to install more than 2400 Philips GreenPower LED production modules with three different light recipes over a total surface area of 4600 m2. As the only artificial light source, the modules provide supplementary lighting to the seedlings when insufficient natural daylight is available.
