that have been made with LED technology. In fact, it has improved so much we were able to upgrade more of the lighting than we had originally planned."
- Andy Sheridan, Manchester Airport Facilities Manager
Manchester Airport Group (MAG) is dedicated to creating cleaner airport atmospheres. As part of its wide-ranging sustainability programme, it sought to reduce its carbon emissions by 25%. Could Philips help MAG to reduce its energy consumption in the arrivals and check-in halls?
"LED ceiling lights were the obvious choice for the airport lighting, but this technology was a new concept for the airport. “The lighting makes a significant contribution to our emissions”, explained Facilities Manager Andy Sheridan. “Although we had used LEDs in small exterior lighting projects before, this was our first use of LEDs in a public indoor space”.
A combination of PowerBalance and GentleSpace LED was chosen for the project. Both of these luminaires are included on the Energy Technology list, enabling the airport to claim Enhanced Capital Allowances. 2498 luminaires were replaced, and a further 1356 redundant ones were removed. Both new luminaires offer energy efficient performance, which is leading to significant C02 reductions.
The combination of the two luminaires accommodates the variation in ceiling heights in the two halls. GentleSpace is powerful enough to illuminate the room from a high ceiling, and both fixtures emit a bright, clean light that refreshes and welcomes travellers. Andy Sheridan reported that “the feedback from the new lighting has been very positive. People in other terminals are now asking us to hurry up and upgrade their lighting.”
“The luminaires have been fitted with DALI cabling, ready for a bespoke lighting control system. The airport will be able to align system settings with its flight movement system, so that light levels coincide with passenger arrivals.”
